We are looking at the river cruises by Tauck and Viking from Amsterdam to Budapest. There is a huge difference in price. Is there really that much difference in what the cruiseline can offer?

I have not been on this particular tour but I have been on a number of Tauck trips (both on boats on land) and I find they have great ships -there is a difference - and in quality of tour leaders. In all tours, you tend to get what you pay for.
Our only river cruise (Russia) was with Viking and we were extremely pleased. I think, with any tour, everything turns on the staff on that particular tour. We happened to have an outstanding chef on our cruise, along with wonderful tour guides. The local guides were terrific as well.
You may want to have a look at the forum on CruiseCritic.
Hi; I think you would enjoy either company. Tauck Tours are 'deluxe' and Viking 'firat class'. We have been on a 'first class' cruise on the Rhine and it was lovely. But if you choise Tauck, check their price and also check with these discount companies that sell Tauck Tours. Richard www.cheapertravel.com/ of www.affordabletours.com/
Also check out Avalon rivercruises. They are owned by Globus and do a fantastic job. We cruised Budapest to Amsterdam 2 years ago with Avalon and it was the best vacation, most relaxing we ever had.Avalon and AMA have the largest cabins on the rivers at 172 sq ft. We also use www.affordabletours.com to make our arrangements. I just booked a France rivercruise on Avalon using affordable tours for next April. I got a 2 for 1 deal that was just to good to pass up.IMHO Tauck is really overpriced considering the ports and tours are the same no matter which company you go with. Do a little research by checking out the river cruise threads on www.cruisecritic.com. There are several people posting on there that are VERY unhappy with Viking. The other companies I would consider besides Avalon are Uniworld and AMA.You might also think about going Budapest to Amsterdam because if the weather is bad you will sail right thru it. If you go Amsterdam to Budapest the bad weather will follow you the whole way.You will love rivercruising. It is a wonderful way to see Europe.
