Would anyone be able to help me with details of bus transport and whether we (4 adults) can go from Taormina up via Messina and along the north coast of Sicily to Palermo or do we have to go back to Catania to catch a bus? We didn't really want to go through the centre of Sicily, as we would like to see the coast line.

The Rough Guide and the Lonely Planet generally have excellent information about transportation options. If you don't already have one or the other (and I highly recommend them!), glance at them at your local library or bookstore.

And Cadogan is excellent. Is there any chance you could take a detour to Lipari? Those islands are among our best memories of a three week trip we took a number of years ago.

Do you absolutely need to go by bus? You could do it by train, changing in Messina. Slow, I know, but you might see more than from the bus. "www.trenitalia.it".
