Tallinn Shopping

We are spending 5 nights in Tallinn in July. What is the shopping like there? For clothes or handmade items? Are there just the main tourist type shops? What things are "local" that would be nice things to take home?

Is anyone familiar with the ballpark of shipping things back to the U.S.? I know it will depend on the weight / size but in Germany mailing a post card to the U.S. was $3 it is more like German rates or like U.S. postal rates?

I thought I told you to post on the Cruise Forum!

Do you want a lickin'

The reason is that I think you are doing a Baltic Cruise and there are more people on the Cruise Forum that have done a Baltic cruise ...and

have stopped at the ports you will be doing also.
So more people to help you.

Anyway , with five night in Tallinn , you really have lots of time to tour the city.

I think most of your interesting shopping will be done in the Old Town within the walls.

I can tell you that the main shopping street is Viru Street and you may well enter Tallinn Old Town through the Viru Gates.

Viru Street lead you right to the Old Town Square.

Once in the Old Town Square , there is a maze of side streets with quaint little shops.

Pikk street being one of the main streets off the Old Town Square.

In fact Viru and Pikk Streets are the two mains streets.

The Viru Gates are two Vine covered Towers.....as you enter through these towers....walk half a block straight ahead.

You are now Muurihahe street corner.....now TURN RIGHT.

See all those red leaning canopies.
Each red canopy is leaning over a store or a shop.

Just walk along , browse and shop.
When you are finished shopping along Muuriheha Street, turn around and shop along the other side of the street.

Okay, your are back at Viru Street...turn RIGHT and walk about 3 block straight down Viru street and you come to the Old Town Square.

From here, you can virtually go in any direction and shop.

But I would cross the Old Town Square to your RIGHT...because there are more quaint shops here.

What to Buy!!

Let me just give you a few ideas. ( I am not a shopper )

1.Estonia Sweaters are a a favourite buy and the prices are cheap.
2. There are nice knitted vests, hats and socks.
3. There are Russian items like lacquered boxes,
hand painted eggs, ceramic dolls of all sizes.

The prices for the Russian items are cheaper than in St.Petersburg.

Many Russians still live in Tallinn.

Okay enough... you go browse and buy what you like

Percy, am constantly amazed at your detailed tips!

Twosassyk, the sweaters, hats, gloves, etc are good buys and make excellent gifts. We also found a store selling beautiful Bohemian crystal right on the Old Town Square, they had loads of stuff on sale and the prices were unbelievable, they ship out to the US if you buy a minimum amount. We picked up some exquisite pieces, they also had some lovely old lithos and pencil drawings of the old town. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the shop, but its shouldn't be hard to find, it's on the square, to the right of the Town Hall.
