I plan to spend a month this summer in Riga, Latvia, and thought that a short trip to Tallinn would be fun. Has anyone visited Tallinn? Any good ideas for a moderately priced hotel in the old city? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

As far as hotels go in Estonia it is realitively cheap, probably around 40-50 dollars a day in a downtown hotel. Day trips to Helsinki on the boat are realatively cheap also around 10 dollars. I would suggest that you purchase a baltic states rail pass that is the best way to travel. Have fun and while there check out a market called the black market (Musto marentka) or something like that I can't remember the spelling. See you and have fun. John
Two years ago we stayed at the Hotel Viru. It's a bit bland, but very reasonably priced and our bedroom boasted a spectacular view of the Old City gates. Tallinn is a very special, very old city, with history museums, tiny bakeries, ancient walls and narrow alleyways. We loved it. The Hotel Viru was filled with military personnel on some sort of NATO get together, and we felt as if we'd stumbled into a WWII movie.
