Switzerland North From Müstair to Zurich

As the last part of a trip that takes us through Germany, Austria, Italy (Dolomites), and Switzerland; my wife and I plan to travel north through Switzerland to the Zurich Airport. We are traveling by car and are going to spend a day at Igis, where some of my ancestors lived. We are also considering stopping at Müstair, Poschiavo, and Guarda. We would appreciate recommendations for lodging, restaurants, sights to see. We expect to have 3 to 5 days for traveling through Switzerland.

Hi,

If you'll be in Müstair, Switzerland, don't miss the Convent of St. John.

Just over the border in Italy there's the small medieval walled town of Glurns/Glorenza.

Also nearby is Castle Coira/Churburg castle. One of our favorite castles. No English tours, but the guide filled us in as best she could in English. Still loved the castle anyway.

Also worth a visit is Marienberg monastery next to Mals/Malles.

If looking for a place to stay, we can recommend the Hotel Panorama in Malles/Mals just 15 minutes or so from the Swiss border.

Thanks for the information Paul. We had already planned a stop in Glurns but had not decided on lodging or selected any sights to see in Switzerland. We've previously visited a few other places in Switzerland but, except for Zurich, they aren't on our route for this trip.

Poschiavo is probably a bit out of the way if you're coming from the Dolomites - I guess you'll drive via Merano and up the Venosta valley to Glurns - Müstair.

In this case I would probably stay overnight in Guarda for at least three nights. Plenty to do in the area (castle Tarasp, lots of hikes, picturesque villages, a day trip or two to the Upper Engadine).

And yes, do visit Glurns and the Benedictine Abbey in Müstair.

Hi again,

All the sights I listed are in Italy, just over the border from Müstair, Switzerland. They are in what is called the Vinschgau/Val Venosta. Beautiful area in the Sud Tirol.

oops, I meant to add that most of the places I listed are within 10 or 15 minutes of Glurns/Glorenzo.

Thanks for the additional comments. I had been away from Fodors doing other things for a few days.
