Hi there,
My husband and I have a month (lucky us!!) to go to Europe this summer.
Our schedule is quite loose at the moment, but we do need to officially book our flights within the next couple of days (work reasons). We can fill in the details later, but we need a general game plan so we know where to fly out of to return home (we want to depart from a different city so we don't have to double back to where we've been).
So far, the plan is to fly in to Zurich and spend about a week and a half in Switzerland (my husband LOVED Lauterbrunnen when he backpacked Europe, so we'll likely be based out of there). We then want to go down through the north of Italy: we've both been to Rome, so we don't need to go that far south, but we'd like to see Venice before heading down to spend a week or so in Tuscany (Florence, then the countryside - we're wine fans!). Then it's over to (possibly) Monaco, Nice and Marseilles. We considered spending a week or so in that area on the French Riviera and then flying out of Marseilles, but thought we might prefer spending only a couple of days there and then heading north to the Rhone Valley (Burgundy, Beaujolais - as I said, we like wine), and then flying out of Lyon or Geneva. We don't want to go as far north as Paris this time - we'd rather enjoy a more relaxed pace.
So, to sum up:
ARRIVE - ZURICH
Week 1-2 - Switzerland, spend a week or so around Lauterbrunnen.
Week 2-3 - North of Italy and Tuscany
Week 3-4 - French Riviera? Monaco? Rhone Valley?
DEPART - ??? This is the big question: should we fly out of Marseilles, Lyon or Geneva?
(We live in Canada, so we can get a direct flight to Zurich, but there would be one transfer from any of the three options listed for the way home)
THANK YOU so much for your help!!
Switzerland, Italy (not Rome) & France (not Paris) - where to depart from?

I would fly out of Marseilles and base the latter part of your holiday in the Riviera. It's SO beautiful there and lots to see and do. Parts of the Riviera are very relaxed, look up Beaulieu-sur-Mer, it's my favourite place in that part of France. Slightly less "lifestyles of the rich and famous" than other places along the coast, if you get me?! Lots of amazing places to eat and fabulous wine too. I wouldn't advise staying in Monaco AT ALL. It's very expensive, built up and only worth a day-trip IMO. If you're going to be in or near Nice, the train to Monaco runs really regularly and only takes about 30 mins so a day-trip is very easy to do! If you do decide to spend your time in Cote d'Azur let me know and I can give you plenty of recommendations for good restaurants and places to go, I have been going to Beaulieu every year since 2005 (so, yes, I'm biased, but I know France well and it's my favourite of the places you're trying to decide between!).
It depends on your ground transportation. If you rent a car in Switzerland to drive around Italy (make sure that the rental has the proper insurance coverage of Italy)and France, it is best to return it in Switzerland to avoid cross-border drop-off fees.
Thanks so much for your suggestions!
Michael, we are considering renting, but perhaps only on each week-long(ish) stop and then returning the car to take public transport (trains?) to our next major destination. I'll keep that in mind when we're deciding, though!
Beccafly, your insight is helpful - the "lifestyles of the rich and famous" is exactly the sort of thing I would tire of in about half an hour, which is why I thought wine country would be a better fit. I did look up Beaulieu-sur-Mer at your suggestion, and it does look lovely... Once a year since 2005 - how wonderful! On the off-chance, have you ever been to the Amalfi coast? My husband and I spent a week on our honeymoon a couple of years ago in a lovely little hotel right on the water there, and I guess my concern is that the French Riviera might not quite measure up! I just wonder how they would compare.
Thanks for the tip about Monaco, too - I think I will take that advice. I may be in touch about the specific recommendations later - thanks so much for the offer!
