I am one of four persons planning a trip to the Italian and Swiss Alps next summer. Any suggestions as to where to go and whether to go on an organized tour or travel on our own would be appreciated.

I'd suggest you get a travel guidebook, read it and narrow down your choices. Then come back with a more specific question regarding more specific places. "The Swiss/Italian Alps" is too big an area for your readers to handle. We all have our favorites, and they may be very different. So read a little and try to pick at least a couple of areas that seem to be your favorites.
From some of your earlier posts, I gather you have been in the Alps before. I would hope you could have narrowed your choices based on your previous visit.
The Bernina Express Train is the only rail route that is above gorund as it crests the Alps (versus being in a tunnel). If that type of thing would interest you then it is spectacular.
The better of the two sections is from St. Moritz/Pontresina to Tirano, Italy.
