Swiss trains - sending your luggage on to the next hotel

Hi all

I remember hearing from a seasoned Switzerland traveler that in the Alps you can leave your hotel in the morning with the intent to hike on to the next hotel.. and put your luggage on a train with instructions for the next hotel.. and it is delivered to the hotel for you and is in your room waiting for you when you arrive.

is this still common? is it only in select locales? that may be a nice perk for at least my Vevey-Zermatt link.

sounds like a great system if you ask me!

Perhaps pre 9/11.
Unaccompanied baggage is a very real security threat and I would be very surprised if Swissrail allowed it.
Check with their website or phone the agent in NY.

I am sure it still works with the Swiss Railways. At least I heard so AFTER 9/11.

Not sure about the details, but I know you can send your luggage to your next stop.

Maybe you can find something on the www.sbb.ch site?

http://www.rail.ch/pv/baggage_e.htm

This is the link regarding domestic luggage service. Though note that it may take a full day to arrive in it's destination, and that I think you would have to pick it up not your hotel.
