I read over and over on this forum and have checked the swisstravelsystem site and everyone says that Swiss rail passes for children are free of charge. However, when we travelled in Switzerland a couple of years ago, we were charged 20chf for each child (my husband and I had half fare cards). When I queried it, I was told that it was only free if purchased outside of Switzerland.
I have absolutely no problem with paying 20chf as I think this is still very cheap but I'm curious as to what the rules really are, just for my own interest and so I can stop telling others that there is actually a charge.
Thanks!

TR Provence, Israel, Switzerland, Italy..April 16 a day of AA infamy

Children under 6 are free. Children 6-16 require the special card (now 30 chf) to travel for free. If they don't have that, the fare is 1/2 the adult fare.
Thank you for clarifying this.
I thought that if the parents are traveling on a Swiss PASS they could get a Swiss Family CARD (free) which allows children up to 15 years of asge to travel for free. is this no longer the case?
Dukey:
thats how the official www.raileurope.com website reads:
Children ages 6-15 travel free (with at least one parent) when a Family Card is requested, at time of purchase of Swisspass.
I think the difference here is Half Fare Card vs Swisspass...
