We are staying 3 nights in Wengen, and will have a 2nd class Swiss Pass. I am a bit confused by what is covered and what is not from Wengen. For example, Is the cable car from Wengen to Grindelwald via Mannlichen covered? Is there a sourcebook somewhere that clearly states what is and isn't covered by the Swiss Pass in that region?

the best way to determine this, imo, is to go to the website for each cable car and see the rules for yourself.

You'll have to enlarge the map a lot to see the dots and dashes for the cable cars in the Jungfrau region, but it's there.

The Swiss Pass will get you a 50% discount as I recall.

When you buy your Swiss Pass you will get a map of all lines of 100% coverage and those with 50% or 25% (very few at 25%) - cable cars generally are 50% off with a Swiss Pass but if the cble car connects two places where people live then it is 100% covered - like the ones from the Lauterbrunnen Valley to Murren (via Gimmelwald or Grutschalp) are 100% covered because they link towns - but just going to mountain tops it is 50% off - thus Wengen to Mannlichen is 50% off because Mannlichen is not a town.

Interlaken-Ost to Wengen is 100% covered as the train links two towns - above Wengen trains to Kleine Schiedegg are only 25% off - Kl Schiedegg is not a town or it would be 100% covered.

For lots of great info on Swiss trains, passes, etc I always spotlight these IMO fine sites: www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com (to talk to an expert with questions like this call Byron there - I've bought passes from him for years and he will answer any questions IMe even if not buying); www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com.

Note that when you use your final flexible travel day the pass terminates so to get the 50% off on days in between flexible days keep that last day until you no longer need to use the pass.

anyone in the Lauterbrunnen area who wants what seems to me the most thrilling cabe cars in the region should take the cable way from either Lauterbrunnen or Stechleberg (two mile postal bus ride from Lauterbrunnen or sweet flat walk along a gurgling stream - these are like flying in planes - especially when descending - it seems like you are plunging to the valley floor - nervous Nellies should stand in the middle of the rather large cars to not be freaked.

the Stechelberg cable goes to Gimmelwald, another must very unique places out in the middle of nowhere and then to Murren and onto The Schilthorn/Piz Gloria - making the whole thing what some sources say is the longest cableway in the region.

ALL aerial cable ways that I know of are at least covered 50% (someone said there may be a few in some remote areas not covered but all the ones an average tourist will encounter will at least be covered 50% - don't worry about that - a few, if they link towns may be free but no reason IME doing any research of what is a standard thing with a Swiss Pass - 50% off all aerial cable ways if not free.

This is why I always buy a Half-Fare Card and not a Swiss Pass.

You can also get to Grindelwald via train by Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg and change to Grindelwald.

but do you know that a Swiss Pass gives the exact same 50% off discounts on everything the Half-Fare Card does except the Jungfraujoch train above Wengen (25% for pass)? You seem not to by those comments?

But the Swiss Pass is much more expensive than the Half-Fare Card,
which is good for ONE month of travel.

I always come out ahead with the HF Card no matter what you claim here.

Again you should investigate the Swiss Card which gives everything the Half-Fare thing does but two train-bus trips from any airport border point to any place in Switzerland and out to any border place or airport - many folks find this a tad cheaper and sometimes much cheaper than the Half-Fare Card and gives everything it does.

So you automatically go for the half Fare Card but for others I strongly advise comparing it to the Swiss Card which can save money often over the Half-Fare Card alone.
Even Thin I suggest may find it a better deal if he/she/it ever looked into anything but the Half-Fare Card. This Swiss Card should always be presented as an option along with the Half-Fare Card IMO.

anyone blindly buying the Half-Fare Card may be wasting some money if they do not also consider the Swiss Card.

I did look into the Swiss Pass for my trips to the BO.

I plugged in my itinerary to the SBB website for train tickets and I came out ahead several hundred US dollars with the HF card over the Swiss Pass.

I am not blind.

Half-Fare Cards or Swiss Cards which again give everything a Half-Fare Card does but more - are good for folks going from an airport or border point to one location, like the Jungfrau Region, and staying in that area before heading back to an airport or border station - better than a Swiss Pass often but do not mix up the Swiss Pass with the Swiss Card - the Swiss Card could give Thin everything he/she/it wants out of the Half-Fare Card and more for less.
