Swiss itinerary - please comment

Jump to last reply

Hi - We are a couple visiting Switzerland for a vacation by rail for the scenery. Once I have an itinerary then I will ask more questions about lodging.

Sun Oct 20 - arrive Zurich early a.m.
Mon Oct 21 - train to St. Moritz
Tue Oct 22 - Glacier Express to Zermatt
Wed Oct 23 - day in Zermatt
Thur Oct 24 - Train to Geneva
Fri Oct 25 - Train to Interlaken for a stop and then reboard for Lucern
Sat Oct 26 - visit Mt Pilatas from Lucern
Sun Oct 10/28 - train to Zurich airport

Here are my questions:
1) Please comment on itinerary. We can build in another few days. What towns should we add days on to for sight seeing?

2) Could you please tell me the train station that I should look up? For instance, Interlaken, is it Interlaken West, Interlaken OST, Interlaken DIH? How do you know which station to pick?

3) We would like to ski for a day and rent equipment? Which city should that be in?

Thanks in avance.

Oh my where to start... You do realize that end October is not a very good time at all to be visiting the Alps, don't you? Short days, probably rain in the lower elevations and snow above... Also, that is a massive amount of time to spend on trains - do you enjoy them that much?

    1) See my opening remarks about your itinerary - I would pick another time of year to go to Switzerland. If your plans are pretty much set, I would spend some time in Bern (even an overnight) as it's a nice medieval city, so go from Geneva to Bern, then from Bern to Luzern via Interlaken the next day - or even skip Interlaken entirely, as the town itself is nothing special, just an excellent base for excursions.

    2) Go to www.rail.ch for train schedule info, and just enter the town name - it will always suggest the main station (Interlaken Ost in this case) first.

Re: item 3), that's pretty easy: in October, you'll only be able to ski on the Klein Matterhorn glacier in Zermatt. Do note that the ski area is extremely high up (almost 4000 meters), so not a good idea if you are subject to altitude sickness.

Sorry I can't be more positive... hope this helps anyway.
