Swiss Family Card
Hello!! I understand (from my sister who just came back from Switzerland) that buying the Swiss Pass there is a little cheaper than getting it from Rail Europe. However, can we also get the Swiss Family Card there?? Or do you need to buy the Pass here in the US to get the Family Card. Many thanks.

Caroline

Dear Caroline:

You can get the Swiss family card at any Swiss railway station. It will cost CHF 20.00 (about $11.75) and will let your children up to 16 years travel free and your children from 16 to 25 years (as long as they're single and officially living with you) travel at half price.

Hope this helps, enjoy your trip

Phil.

Hi there.
Take a look at this web site for the SBB.
http://www.sbb.ch/pv/billab_e.htm
It is English and tells more about the various cards. Anything you buy from Rail Europe is more expensive than it is in Europe. The only restriction I know of is that the Swiss Card (NOT the Pass) is available only in Zurich at the airport train station.
We got our Swiss Family Card at Lausanne station for CHF 20.00. Just walk up to the ticket window and buy, so simple.

However, if you want the Family Card for free, you need to ask for it when you buy the Swiss Pass which you MUST get it in the US (or looks like also at Zurich airport station.) I cannot comment if you can also get Family Card for free at Zurich airport station if you buy the Swiss Card there.

All the passes except the Half Fare Card may be purchased in North America or in Switzerland ... at 30+ train stations.

Repeat, the Swiss Pass and others may be purchased in Switzerland at major stations. With the exchange rate it's just a bit less expensive to buy in Switzerland. I don't know where the idea started that Swiss Passes (and the others) may only be purchased in the US, but it's just not so. Proof of residence outside the US is required, for which your passport suffices.

The Family Card is free when you purchase a Swiss Pass in North America if you request it at the same time as your pass purchase. It costs CHF30 in Switzerland.

Detailed information on various pass offers in Switzerland at www.twenj.com/swpasses.htm I believe it is the most comprehensive and easy to understand of any resource on the web for Swiss rail passes.

Rome.Switzerland.Bavaria
