Swimming in Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy
For my next European vacation I want to go to Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo and Portofino. Probably base in Santa Margherita. I had planned on early Sept 2018 but that is a long time to wait. I was on the Amalfi Coast in May 2014 and the water was too cold to swim.
I want to avoid huge crowds and high prices but still want to swim in the Med. Would early June work or should I wait and go the first week of September?

I typically visit the area in late May and find the sea chilly, but some years you can have a warm spell and still find it refreshing rather than jolting. Early June would probably be okay, but in early September you would be guaranteed "swimmable" seas. A lot can depend on topography I think--after years of finding chilly seas at the same time of year in various parts of Croatia and Italy, this year we found marvelous warm water in southern Tuscany, which seemed to have a shallow sandy sea bed (no expert here, it could have been weather conditions as well).

I'm a swimmer and I found the seas to chilly in late September in both those towns...but I'd bet earlier in the month would be great. Just be sure to monitor the jellyfish factor. I know they have been plaguing beaches in the south, not sure of the situation in Liguria.
This is scary but fascinating, as applies to Puglia:

No jellyfish problem around the Genova area, but that could change so good idea to pay attention.
There was not a record heat wave in Liguria this summer. The area stayed relatively mild, in contrast to the rest of Italy, and autumn blew in quite early.
What happens differers from year to to year, but normally there is a high chance of rainy days in May, and much less so in the first half of September.
