Sweden for two weeks

We are going to Malmo, Sweden for the Solheim Cup golf tournament in September, 2003. We will be going for 2 weeks. Should we plan on spending the entire time in Sweden traveling around or visit other countries and, if so, which ones? Is it difficult to drive around Sweden planning your own itinerary and driving from hotel to hotel? Where is a nice place to stay in Malmo near the Barseback Golf and Country Club? Thanks so much.

Karen,
We visited Denmark and Sweden in late August 1999. We used the ScanRail passes which included a car rental for 48 hours. We opted to start our vacation in Copenhagen, took the train & ferry to Helsingborg and rented the car there. We wanted to visit Hoganas where my husband's grandfather was born and thought it might be handy to have the car for that part of the trip. It was very easy to drive (same side of the road as us). We had an automatic. But this was a very quiet part of Sweden. We had great luck with train travel. From Helsingborg we took the train to Gothenburg, then from there took the high speed train to Stockholm. Sweden is a beautiful country with much to see. You will also be very close to Denmark which I highly recommend and Norway which I didn't get to on that trip. Also, you might want to rely on trains / ferries rather than a car. The public transportation is excellent.

Karen,

My husband and I toured Scandinavia for two weeks last May by car. In that two weeks we were able to spend time in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Driving is very easy in the Scandinavian Countries. We had no troubles at all. I'd be happy to give you some destination and itinerary ideas. Feel free to e-mail me for specific information.

Devona

I agree that the public transportation is good, but I would rent a car. It will most likely be cheaper for two or more. Driving in Scandinavia is easy, and you don’t have to worry about drunks on the road. Do not drink and drive; the penalties are very stiff! Rent before you leave; Auto Europe seems to have the best rates.
I don’t know how long your tournament will last, but two weeks in Malmö would be a very long time. A new bridge now links Malmö and Copenhagen, so that is easy access. You could easily do quite a bit of Sweden and Denmark in ten days. If you have longer, the trip from Oslo to Bergen is absolutely beautiful.
I made this Scandinavian trip in a car in July of last year, spent Christmas in Copenhagen, and will be going back for a car trip in June this year. I have relatives and friends there, the reason for so many trips.
Boots
It was awhile ago, but I recall the drive from the Malmo area to Stockholm to be a real bore. (LOTS of trees..) However, I think to be in Sweden and not visit Stockholm would be a mistake. I think the excursion boats to places like Gripsholm, Drottingholm, etc. stop end of Aug., but you can still get there by public transportation. Plus Stockholm itself is worth two days, at least.
Gheesh! I just spent 10 minutes crafting a reply, clicked "Post My Reply" and it is apparently in cyberspace oblivion.

Long story short: Copenhagen a short train or ferry ride from Malmo. Don't advise car there--very limited parking. Do a search on this forum for past advice about what to see/do in this lovely, fun, compact city.

Go to Helsingborg, it is a much more architecurually stimulating city than Malmo. You can take a ferry to Helsignør and see Kronborg castle.
