Sweden & Denmark Itinerary Advice
I am planning a trip to Sweden & Denmark with my husband and two children (ages 8 & 9) and would greatly appreciate advice and suggestions for our trip.
Our tentative plan looks like this:
Stockholm, 3 nights
Gothenburg, 2 nights
Aarhus, 2 nights
Copenhagen, 4 nights
We intend to take the ferry & train to get from Gothenburg to Aarhus. And, we have allocated 4 nights to Copenhagen because we might take a daytrip to Roskilde.
A few specific questions: Is this a reasonable itinerary given the fact that we will not have a car? Are these cities/towns all conducive to relying entirely on public transportation? For those who have traveled with children to this region, is there anything that you would say we must-see? Please contribute any tips or ideas you might have to share.

All those towns are easy to reach by train and or ferry - you may investigate the ScanRail Pass that covers all trains and many ferries or gives a discount of 50% or so. For lots of good info on Scandinavian trains and passes check these IMO fantastic sources: www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com.

IMHO you really need more nights in both Stockholm and Copenhagen if you really want to see much.
In Copenhagen with kids you will want to see Tivoli - fund during the day but better at night - when they have firworks at midnight (it's not dark enough before then in summer). Also Little Mermaid. There's a history museum which has some interesting exhibits on prehistory in the area. And Roskilde is fascinating. Don;t miss the changing of the Guard - I think at charlottenbourg.
For Stockholm be sure to do at lest one boat ride, explore the old town and the Royal Palace - check if they too still have a changing of the guard. And visiting the Vasa - a reconstructed warship from the 17th century that can be explored is a must.

Bakken is the world's oldest amusement park and one that kids that age will enjoy as much or probably more than Tivoli, more oriented to older folks IME -

Bakken is free to enter but the rides are not free. It's in a really nice part of Copenhagen which is worth looking around. Bellevue Beach is close to Bakken. There is also Copenhagen Zoo. I'm not familiar with things to do in Gothenburg or Aarhus, I would be inclined to spend more time in Stockholm and Copenhagen and maybe leave out Aarhus and Gothenburg. Its quite a distance from Aarhus to Copenhagen.

We had 4 nights in Copenhagen, 3 nights in Helsinki, 2 nights in Tallinn and 4 nights in Stockholm... out of all the places, we could have used more time in Stockholm.
The Vasa museum was great, as per my sister (I skipped it, wasn't feeling well) and I enjoyed the ABBA museum, very interactive and fun. The ice bar at the Nordic Sea Hotel was also fun. Expensive, as was everything in Stockholm, but different than the usual museum/touristy stuff.
