Hi Everyone,
Recently my father, sister, brother-in-law and I surprised my mom for a big birthday with a family trip to Sicily. She has been doing a lot of family ancestry research (her mom was born in Messina and her father's family is from Montevago) so she is more than excited to go, especially with all of us!
I had posted before at the very beginning of planning, and now that I have a better idea of our schedule, I was hoping you might be able to look it over for us! Nothing has been booked yet, so any suggestions about where to stay, where to eat, or what to see would be greatly appreciated!
Here is a little bit about us...
-4 out of 5 of us are teachers, so we have to go in July, I know it's not the best time, but it's our only option!
-we'd like the hotels and restaurants to be moderately priced, we will need 3 rooms and want to stay in safe, clean and relatively cheap hotels, nothing fancy necessary
-we are interested in history, culture, taking pictures and wandering, we are not at all into clubs, bars, etc.
-we are into good, traditional food and gelato!!! any suggestions?
I can't begin to tell you how much we truly appreciate your help and ideas. This is going to be a family trip we will really treasure forever! Here's what I have so far!
July 8- fly from JFK to Palermo
July 9-11 Stay in Palermo- Maybe a train ride to Cefalu? I'm looking at Butera 28, looks like a great place to stay!
July 11- Rent a car (for the rest of the trip)-there seems to be an autoeurope office pretty close to the hotel, so hopefully we can pick up a car there
and here is where I dont know how to time things and could really use some help!
July 11-17, We'd like to visit castellamare del golfo, montevago, agrigento, porto empedocle, syracuse, taormina, and I'm sure there are places I'm missing!
Any suggestions on where to stay and how many days to stay there? I'm thinking two hotels during this time and lots of side trips?
July 17-20 Messina, Torre Faro-my mom has family here and she would like to visit them and explore the area
July 20- depart from Catania airport.
I truly truly appreciate your time and suggestions! Thanks so much in advance!

What a lovely gift!
> July 9-11 Stay in Palermo
Be sure to visit the Cathedral in Monreale!

Of these, i visited Agrigento, Siracusa, and Taormina and was glad I stayed in a different hotel for each - for me, the time to visit any one as a day trip from any of the others would have made for too much time in transit.
Enjoy!
You will simplify your life enormously if you post your question on the TripAdvisor message board for Sicily. There is a poster there named Vagabonda who lives in Sicily and is absolutely tireless in answering detailed questions about itineraries and places to stay. There are other experienced Sicily travelers there posting as well and you will get many great tips to make this an easier trip.
I will only add here that Sicily is a marvelous sightseeing destination, and it is of course fun to try to see as many of the great sights as you can. HOWEVER, don't underestimate how amazing it will be for not only your mother but all of you to be in your ancestral home. You will see a side of life and your own past that is rich with revelation. Even if there are no "sights" in town, you may want to spend a good deal of time there, and leave open the possibility for serendipity.
Were it me, I would consider going there first. That way, if you are all sitting over dinner one night and somebody says, "I don't want to leave" then you can stay. Give yourselves time there, and if it turns out to be totally boring, you can go to Etna or the Islands and find sights to see. But that would be better to me then arriving in your last 3 days, finding it is an incredibly moving place to be, and wishing you had more time there.
If you haven't seen Cinema Paradiso, you might want to do that pronto.
(And get the over to TripAdvisor.)
Is the Inspector Montalbano TV series available in the US? It is filmed in the ravishing Ragusa/Noto/Porto Empedocle area.
What a wonderful gift and what an amazing experience you have in store.
It is too bad that you have so little time in Palermo, a wonderful and fascinating city, but as kja recommends above, do not miss the cathedral at Monreale. It will take about a half day from Palermo (get there on a city bus)and was one of the most memorable sights of our trip.
Make sure to hold on to your wallets when you're on that city bus to Monreale!
Thank you all so much! I'll definitely post on trip advisor as well!
