Surprise 30th Birthday Trip... ideas?
I am surprising my husband for his 30th birthday in September and want to do 8-9 days in Europe. I would love somewhere with amazing food, option for a few days on the beach and interesting cities to explore.
Portugal has been rattling around in my mind. We went to Greece last year for our honeymoon and I would LOVE to find a similar vibe that offers water, history, great food and lovely people.
Lastly would love to go somewhere in Europe neither have been... We've both spent a lot of time in the UK and been tp Barcelona, Paris, Rome... but the rest is ours to explore.
Would love any ideas...

San Sebastian has memorable food and a beautiful beach but it has no nearby cities of interest to explore, so you'd need to combine it with rather more distant places. It has very unpredicatble weather. You can get sudeen chilly rainstorms in September.
Your instinct for Portugal is correct if what you want is water, history, great food and lovely people. Sicily might also work for you -- although it can be staggeringly hot in early September.. Croatia would have lovely September weather and all you are looking for. In very early in September I would also consider the beaches of Belgium + Amsterdam and -- surprise! -- the beaches of Poland. Both Belgium & Poland have amazing food, drink and lots of options for fascinating cultural excursions, important sights of history nearby.
Would highly recommend you bring your hsuband into the planning and making the final choice rather than totally surprise him.
