Suggestions for Northeast Italy

We're staying in St Johann im Pongau Austria and if possible, would love to take a day trip down to Italy. Any suggestions for something to check out in the Northest region w/in about an hour or so of the the border? We're most interested in going somwehere, soaking up the local ambiance, bumming around and checking out the sights.
