Suggestions for a base in Rhodes
I am looking for a base for a small family (2 adults + 9 year old) for our annual summer holiday which we plan to spend (mostly at any rate) in Rhodes. Got some great suggestions here before so hoping people can come up with some ideas for me.
We've visited Rhodes before, many years ago, and stayed in the old town. We will visit the old town again on this trip, but would prefer to stay by the sea in a resort (ideally within shouting distance of the old town so we can visit in the evenings, but if that's not possible we might split the trip into 2 and do a few days in the old town and the rest of the time elsewhere).
We are looking for a base for a relaxing holiday. I want to pick the village / resort first, and then find somewhere to stay. What we want is a town or village by the sea, with plenty of restaurants/tavernas and a nice atmosphere. Some places we have loved in Greece (to give you an idea of the kind of place I am thinking of) are:
- Tolo
- Naoussa in Paros
- Naxos town
- Kalymnos town
- Finnikounda
On Rhodes we want somewhere that has a bit of life. I am worried that I do not know enough about the different resorts there and we will mistakenly end up somewhere tacky. Two places that seem to get good reviews from the research I have done to date are Afandou and Faliraki, but I wonder am I missing somewhere.
Thank you in advance
Jane

You certainly don't want to go anywhere near Falaraki, it's the drinking centre of the island, peopled by teens and twenties indulging in all sorts of weird behavior. Afantou is a bit too far down the coast for easy trips into the Old Town in the evenings.
Have a look at:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/search.../data=!3m1!4b1
This gives the hotels at that end of the island to choose from.

Thanks Steve. Lindos seems to have a big fanbase and sounds like the kind of place you would be better staying in rather than visiting on a day trip with the hordes. It's definitely on the list. I'd like at least 2 bases anyway.
Am thinking of maybe Symi as one base - yes, I know it's not Rhodes, but it is close, and I've never been there, and I do like visiting a new island every time I go to Greece.
Has anyone been to Afandou? Someone I know was there recently and said it was a great spot for a family holiday, but I just haven't seen enough about it to be confident enough to book it for myself.

Another vote for Lindos. Lindos is an attractive town with a great acropolis and has some most beautiful beaches, including St. Paul's Bay just below the acropolis. And you are close enough to Rhodes City and to the Valley of the Butterflies.

Thanks traveller 1959 - I should have said we have decided (based on feedback here and general research) to spend a week/10 days in Lindos. I'm looking for a second centre also in Rhodes, to spend the rest of the holiday, ideally by the beach. Someone suggested Afandou but I'm not getting a warm fuzzy feeling from my research so far!
Cheers
