Suggest best mountain town/village

Hello.
My wife and I are wanting to go to another quaint, scenic village with lots of mountain hiking. This will be part of a 5 week trip and we have about 5 days for this in either Switzerland or Austria. We have already done this once in the Bern-Oberland region at Murren/Gimmewald and loved it. We would like another place similar to this.
Please advise.

Thanks.

Ed,

I have some suggestions but not much personal experience with either.

Gstaad is a favorite hiking destination for one of the frequent posters here, Ursula, who also lives in Switzerland. Unfortunately, I have only spent one afternoon there, and all I can tell you is that it's beautiful -- surrounded by green rolling hills.

Another frequent poster, Ingo, favors the Engadin area: Scuol, Guarda, St. Moritz, Silvaplana, or Sils. I haven't been there yet but all the photos I've seen have been striking.

If you like lakes with your hikes, you could explore Lake Lucerne from one of the smaller towns around the the lake: Vitznau, Weggis, or Brunnen. I am planning to stay in Weggis for my next trip.

If any of these interest you, try doing a text search with the village name -- or pull up the long thread "Lovers of Switzerland" for great descriptions!

s

While Mürren and Wengen are certainly the most scenic I can think of at the moment, I liked Zinal in Val d'Anniviers. Either it or Grimentz are peaceful little villages. We stayed at Hotel du Trift, which is a 2 star place in the "old" Swiss mountain inn mode.
Although it is not luxurious, it was neat, clean, and comfortable.
The hike up to Cabanae de Moiry is a little of a test, but the scenery is awesome; the Moiry Glacier is your companion all the way up. And the view from the side of the valley into the maw of the glacier is spectacular.
You can go elsewhere in the area as well, as far as your legs will take you.
Ed: We enjoyed the hikes we made from Castelrotto in Northern Italy. Seven trail heads and many less official hikes. The area is charming as well. Do a find on Castelrotto and you will get a lot of information.
