I will be studying abroad for the spring term (March-May) at the Vesuvian Institute in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy with my school. We will be taking classes Monday-Thursday, but then we have the weekends to travel where we please. This is my first time to Europe and I am looking for any and all suggestions about where I should go and what I should do once I'm there. The school is taking us on a weekend trip to Venice. We also have a longer weekend to travel during Easter weekend and I was thinking about possibly going to Greece or Amsterdam. I am on a budget so I was planning on staying in hostels, so I will take any advice on those as well!

Is this south of Rome or where is the closest city that we would know?
You will be about a 30 minute train ride from Naples. Take it in and have a ball.
We are going to be flying into Rome, but the closest city is Naples.
Thank you! I can't wait. I have been researching the local trains that run between the towns
Hi NG - You have so many options for trips -
The Amalfi Cast (- Positano, Ravello, Amalfi ...), Capri, Pompei, Ercolano, Vesuvius, Sorrento, Paestum, Naples, Ischia, Montepertuso/Nocelle/'Path of the Gods' (- hike), Solfatara, Caserta, Monte Cassino ...
You could spend several weekends discovering Rome, Florence ... the list is endless.
Hope this helps ...
Steve
As for Greece you would have to fly via Rome, so i don't think you would have much time left to visit Athens for a weekend....
Should you have more time, let's say 3 whole days, it would be doable, easyjet and aegean airlines offer often incredible rates.... ( have paid 80 euro for a roundtrip flight including taxes etc)
Look at the budget airlines for flights out of Naples.

Nearby islands of Ischia (parts of The Talented Mr. Ripley were filmed there) and Procida are easy to reach from Castellammare.
When my daughter studied in Madrid, there were monthly transport passes available to students. Perhaps there is something for the Naples area as the transport in Naples and along the coast is Unico Campania.

The train line between Naples and Sorrento is the Circumvesuviana.

I would try and include a trip to the Sicily-Eastern side with Mt. Etna would be wonderful for a long weekend from where you are. Naples or Rome to Catania by way of plane or ferry? Have fun! Both of my kids studied overseas in Italy and I would highly recommend NOT to buy the Eurorail pass-everyone that bought it in my daughter's group found that they lost so much time and money having it. For long weekends-the budget airlines are the way to go.
