My son will be traveling to Geneva this weekend. He is a college student on a shoestring budget. He will be there for a couple of days. He is planning to do a train tour up into the mountains (Not booked yet, any info on this would be appriciated). Anyone have any suggestions of what he could do?
Thanks

Hi rhaith,
Where is he coming from? He may be able to see the Alps on his way to Geneva.
The closest Alps to Geneva are actually in France . . . cheapest way to get to them is the bus to Chamonix.
Otherwise it'll be about three/four hours on the train.
There are some Prealps nearby -- Mont Pelerin above Vevey or Rochers-de-Naye above Montreux.
Have fun!

He is flying from Maastricht, Netherlands. How long a bus ride is it to Chamonix? Thanks for the info. Is there anything in Geneva?
Hi again,
I've never done the trip myself, but I believe the trip is around two hours. Here's a link to the bus company:
http://212.203.98.98/WW70AWP/WW70AWP.EXE/CTX_184-2-NPhWqczcqB/Main/SYNC_-451185703?DRAPEAU_EN
Just use the drop-down menu to select "Regular Lines Region Bordercross," and the schedules and fares to Chamonix will come up.
I've spent about 11 vacations on Lake Geneva but only a day in the city itself. I stay at Montreux, on the other end of the lake.
Hopefully someone will be able to help you with the city!
