Strike scheduled in Venice, 7/15/05

http://www.actv.it/english/home.php

There is a vaporetto and land bus strike scheduled for Friday, July 15th, 2005. Just in case anyone is going next week...

BTW, on my first trip to Venice, my hotel was right by the train station and I only took the vaporetto once - and I visited all the six sestieri. This, I am ashamed to admit, is because I am afraid of boats and was being silly about it. My point is, don't let a strike deter you! (or an abnormal fear of boats, for that matter)

I'll bet you got to see a lot more of Venice than most people ever see. Good for you!

Hi faredolce, I agree with Holly, walking throughout Venice is absolutely a wonderful way to really see and enjoy Venice although riding on a vaporetto is of course also enjoyable. But walking brings one so close to intimate details on buildings and a closer knowledge of the neighborhoods.

But for visitors arriving at the San Marco Airport on July 15th, I hope at least the watertaxis will be working.

I will never forget my first attempt. I stood on that floating passenger area, where the boat docks. The first vaporetto pulled up, quite normally, it seemed, but with a bit of a slam and bump. The entire docking thing shook and swayed. Man, I was outta there like a shot. It was pretty silly. All it took was some really sore feet for me to get over that a few days later, and suddenly I was the jolliest vaporetto rider ever!

Is ATVO, the other bus service from the airport to Piazzale Roma, affected by this strike?

I read someone's trip report where she found that the water taxis were striking in sympathy with the vaporettos, one day when she needed to get somewhere. I hope that doesn't happen in this case.

Hmmm. Looks like it. They have it posted in Italian on their home page (but not on the English version)

Unless I am wrong. Am I?

Actually, it looks like this is a national strike that will occur for 24 hours in many localities in Italy. It is a strike by personnel of local transit authorities. July 15th is going to be a rough day. Alitalia pilots are on strike that day as well.

Sending this ttt just in case anyone missed it overnight. I couldn't sleep last night and posted it late.

The Italian page referenced by faredolce says in part, "We moreover communicate that, due to ... law 146/90, service will be guaranteed in the following time bands: 6 AM to 9 AM, and 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM." I gather that strikes are regulated in Italy, and the unions are required to maintain a certain basic level of service.

I translated the following, and although I think I have the gist of it, I don't understand the words, "quanto stabilito". The word "stabilito" is not in any of my dictionaries. Perhaps someone can enlighten me. The notice is:

"Si comunica inoltre che, in base a quanto stabilito dalla Legge 146/90, il servizio viene garantito nelle seguenti fasce orarie:

dalle ore 6.00 alle ore 9.00

dalle ore 16.30 alle ore 19.30

Hi, although I am not an expert with the Italian language I can tell you this. Strikes by law, have to be announced in advance. And although workers are on strike there are hours when the strike is not allowed. Reading these threads means that the transportation strike will not be affected during the hours of 6:00am to 9:00am and in the afternoon from 4:30pm to 7:30pm.

It is not unusual for strikes to be cancelled. But strikes in Italy certainly do happen so it is good to be prepared and prewarned.
