stockholm hotel for family
I'm so confused! In researching this forum, Hotel Gamla Stan seems so well-regarded. And I love the quaint piece of it. The travelers on Trip Advisor don't agree, saying it's small, etc. Here's the thing: Hubbie and I and 2 pre-teen girls (10 and 13) are travelling throughout Sweden. We'll be in Stockholm for about 4 nights (still nailing down the specs on dates). We want quiet rooms, good location and comfortable beds. Roomy, sure. But unless it's a closet, we can be a bit cramped. But a bad bed makes me cranky. I don't like less than spotless rooms or stuffy, hot rooms either. We do love sense of history and ambience (thus, my first attraction to Hotel Gamla Stan). First Reissen looks interesting (pool under arches a plus for kids), but some reviews I've read said it can be nosy and too warm (bad or no ac). Hotel Rival is new and looks spiffy, but is it too far afield? Nordic Light seems intersting, too. Hmm. We don't have to go totally budget since we got our fare for free from amex points and we will be staying with friends and family elsewhere in Sweden. So we can splurge within reason. Any thoughts, friends?

kflodin: We thought the Gamla Stan was excellent. Our room was not huge, but it certainly wasn't cramped either. It was very well decorated, very pretty. We had a seating area near the windows. The bathroom was fine. The beds were very comfortable. The breakfast was good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They have very reasonable hotel parking. The location is outstanding. It is very quiet.
It does not have any views. It is an old hotel in the the old town. Consequently, you are looking out the window at the building across the street. We were on the southern exposure, street side and the sun beaming through the windows every morning was great. We would stay there again without reservation. Have a great trip.

Greetings from a snowy Stockholm, it has been snowing since Saturday night. Anyway, all of the hotels you suggested on your post are good, all however have unique personalities and qualities, none can be considered in the budget range.

Early July is an excellent time to be in Stockholm, however it is the busiest time and we are expecting a record breaking cruise season, so please book your hotel reservations as early as possible.
Good luck!

I stayed at the Hotel First Reissen last June with my husband and 2 sons, aged 19 and 12. We had a room on the top floor. It had a king bed and a sofa bed that the boys slept in. We had a small balcony that we opened to get fresh air. We did not find the room stuffy, hot or noisy. We all loved the hotel, and would highly recommend it. The breakfasts were excellent, and the staff friendly and helpful.
