Staying in Trastevere area of Rome?

We will be in Rome for 6 nights next year - I want to rent an apartment and am wondering if renting in the Trastevere area would work well, or if we should really try to be closer to the Campo de Fiori / Piazza Navona area? We've never been to Rome before.

I loved the Trastevere area of Rome with all its restaurants and nice walks. The transport system is so good - you could be over the river to Piazza Navona in no time at all.
I would go for it!

Both areas have their charms and are only 15 minutes apart by foot. You'll pay less for apartments in Trastevere.

Either area will work well, but in Trastevere you'll want to be somewhat close to the Ponte Sisto foot bridge for easy access to the popular tourist areas. Check apartment locations on a map carefully.

I've stayed in both areas(rented an apartment in Trastevere for a month last year) and I would really recommend staying the the Centro Storico-Piazza Navona,Pantheon&Campo dei Fiori neighborhoods.I just think they're more convenient for 99% of what you'll want to see.Lots of people give the impression that Trastevere is a cute, untouristed neighborhood, but it's just as packed with tourists as the rest of Rome!

meant to add...I would specifically recommend staying in those neighborhoods for your first Rome visit.

I would agree with massagediva. For your first trip to Rome, defnitely stay in a more central location such as the neighborhoods she mentioned. We really like staying near the Pantheon, but the others are just as well located.

Trastevere covers a bit of territory, some of it hilly and far from the tram line. An apartment near Viale Trastevere or Ponte Sisto would be great; farther away would not. Study the map carefully before you decide.
