Staying in Amalfi want to go to Pompei - Need Logistics Help
We have reservations for 2 nights in Amalfi May 29/May 30. We are going to be coming from Rome on the 29th. We are traveling with 2 kids (12 and 15) and want to see Pompei. Will it be best for us to take the train from Rome to Salerno, then the ferry to Amalfi and hang out for a half day in Amalfi and then go back to Pompeii the next day (May 30)? OR do we take the train from Rome to Naples, then the Naples to Pompei train and store our luggage (4 large suitcases,) then at the end of the day head down to Amalfi? The luggage storage is the biggest question/issue I have with stopping along the way to Amalfi but on the flip side we are doing a lot of backtracking if we go to Amalfi first then back to Pompei. Help!

Hi Samjam - It would be better IMO to visit Pompeii en route.
(As a day trip from Amalfi you would waste a lot of time on public transport).
There is a luggage storage facility at the entrance to Pompeii.
Hope this helps ...

Hi S,
I would take the train to Salerno and the ferry to Amalfi.
Next day, take the SITA bus to Meta in the morning and the Circumvesuviana to Pompei.
This allows you to see the Amalfi Coast from the road.
Take the C train back to Sorrento, and walk down to the ferry dock. Take the ferry back to Amalfi.
This allows you to see the AC from the water.
Enjoy your visit.

Thanks for the information. How far is it from the train station to the entrance to Pompeii?
I have not heard good things about the Circumvesuviana train and the stations is serves (ie- thieves, dirty, etc)
Would we be taking that train from Pompeii to Salerno?
Thanks again.

Kybourbon-
Will we have any problem with having our luggage with us on the Circumvesuviana commuter train? Ae we able to make a 1st class reservation on these trains? I hear that is the best way to insure you have room for your luggage.
thanks- samjam04

What ira said - perfect.
I don't remember being able to make reservations for the Circumvesuviana, or even a 1st class section. It's more like an above-ground subway than a train. That was a while back, though, so it may have changed.

You won't have trouble bringing your luggage on the Circumvesuviana. It's very likely there will be others on the train doing the exact same thing you are. If your bags are large you will have to stand with them in the vestibule of the car, it's not a very long ride tho and there will likely be other tourists standing with you, to chat with.
You cannot reserve the train and there is no first class. If you've ever been on the subway in NY or the El in Chicago then you've got the picture.

It might be more relaxing to take a coach tour from Amalfi. You could try a local agency. For example: http://www.touringpoint.it/escursionieng.htm

You can take the bus (Marozzi)from Rome Tiburtina station to Pompeii Scavi or Sorrento (if you don't want to stop at Pompeii on the way). Your luggage is stored under the bus so you wouldn't have to worry about it until you arrive at Pompeii or Sorrento. Travel time is a little over 3 hours and cost is 16.5€ (to Pompeii) or 17€ (to Sorrento). The bus leaves Rome at 7 am (makes about 4 stops between Naples and Sorrento) and arrives Sorrento at 10 so you would probably get to Pompeii about 9:30. Pompeii has free luggage storage at the entrance.

The Marozzi website is in Italian and not very user friendly and I can't copy/paste the url with the destinations/prices/routes. www.marozzivt.it
You will get several messages in Italian pertaining to your browser, etc. and you just want click through them with ok or yes. When the main page loads, click prenota marozzi on the left and when that page loads (it can be slow), click prenotazione on the left. Select the date you want with the down arrow in the upper left and enter your date (day then month format). Highlight Roma under localita partenza and Pompei or Sorrento under localita destinazione. Highlight under corsa: Roma Sorrento to get prices and see seat availability.
If you train, you have to carry your luggage down a long flight of stairs in the Naples train station to catch the Circumvesuviana. No classes, no reservations similar to a subway and cost between Naples/Sorrento is about 4€.

Thanks for all the great options. I have also considered storing half our bags at the Rome train station for 2 days, then only taking 2 bags onto Amalfi. We have to go back to Rome on the train and rent a car at the station to continue traveling through Italy.
I assume you can SAFELY leave bags at the Rome train station for 2 days, correct?

If you are going back to the same hotel in Rome, your hotel might agree to store your luggage. I've done that before and just taken a little overnight bag to the Amalfi coast. My hotel had a locked luggage room.
The left luggage at Rome Termini:
Below ground in the Termini Wing, accessible from Forum Termini via the moving walkway, or from via Giolitti or from platform 24.
Rates
- 3.80 € for the first 5 hours
- 0.60 € for each additional hour from the 6th to the 12th
- 0.20 € for each hour after the 12th
6 am - midnight.
Other luggage storage options in Rome would be Rome S. Pietro station and the airport. The airport is the cheaper option, if you are picking up a car near there.

We have decided to take the train from Rome to Salerno. Then take the ferry from Salerno to Amalfi so we can see the coast. We will go back to Salerno the next day (bus?? Ferry??) and take the Circumvesuviana train onto Pompeii.
I need help with the ferry service to Amalfi. When I look at the Metro Del Mare schedule for May 29 I only see a ferry departing from Salerno at 9:30 and 11:30. Our train arrives in Salerno at 12:15. What other ferry options are there?
I see INTERCOSTIERA LINE listed in some web pages, but cannot find a website with timetables, etc.
Thanks.

Hi Samjam - Your next ferry departure from Salerno after 12.15 is not until 14.10
The current ferry timetable (- valid until 31 May 2008) is:
SALERNO – AMALFI
Dep: 08. 20 - 08.40 – 09-40 – 10.40– 11.40 – 14.10 – 15.30 – 17.15
AMALFI – SALERNO
Dep: 10.40 – 12.45 – 16.15 – 17.45 –
Journey time: 35mins. Fare: € 6.00 (one way)
The Circumvesuviana route to Pompeii is from SORRENTO, not Salerno.
But for Pompeii from Amalfi it will be quicker to return to Salerno - and take the train to Pompeii FS.
For train times see:

Hope this helps ...

Steve -
Thank you for the information. Where did you see all these departure times for the ferry? I must not be reading the timetable correctly.
Are there small, local ferries we can use since we don't want to hang around Salerno until 14:10?? Should we just take the bus from Salerno to Amalfi?

Eks - You're going this month, aren't you? That's the current timetable (- until 1 June) - so 10.40 is the earliest ferry
You can go earlier by bus, of course:
