Staying at the Scala House in London?

Some of you seem to know about renting an apt. at the Scala House in London (http://www.scala-house.co.uk/) What can you tell me about the location? Or anything else for that matter? I have a hotel booked, but I'm reading that for a 8 day stay, a flat might be better. Thanks for any info!

I haven't stayed there (I usually rent flats in Victoria/Pimlico or South Kens) but I do know the location and have seen the flats.

The location is fine -- close to three tube stations, Oxford Street for shopping, the British Museum, etc.

The decor is pretty basic but the owners provide very good service

Worst Hotel/Apartment I have stayed at in the last 20+ years with the possible exception of a 3 star in the Plaka a few years ago

I have stayed there and would stay there again. Great location. Very near the Goodge Street tube station. Many shops, pubs and restaurants nearby.

The apartments are spacious. Basic furnishings but fine, at least for us.

I've been a guest at the Scala House three times in the past two years.

It's in a great location. Spitting distance from Goodge St tube and easy walking distance to 3 other stations. West End theaters, Oxford St shopping, British Museum, British Library all w/in easy walking distance. Two groceries w/in a block, two more nearby. Charlotte St (half block away) is filled with really good and moderately priced restaurants, thai, tapas, indian, italian. There's a pub on the corner and a fish/chips shop across the street. Multiple coffee shops.

The apartments themselves are clean, quiet and quite spacious by London standards. The decor is definitely dated and the towels are a bit thin for me. I bring my own. Bath and a half is a real plus. The kitchen is well appointed and outfitted nicely to do meals and/or snacks. We stock the fridge for breakfast and with wine/snacks.

I think the service sets this place apart. The Palos family and staff are warm and very helpful people. This place does A LOT of repeat business (10% discount for returning guests)

Thanks for the great information! mjs, I have to ask you, why was it the worst place you've ever stayed? Please tell!

I would do a search for Scala house as I have previously described our family experience there.
I may be in the minority here but even my wife and children thought our stay at Scala was abysmal. Please also bear in mind that you prepay your stay and if you do not like it there is no refund.
A brief summary of my comments would go as follows. The good: 1: Good location near tube stop and close to the theatre district. 2: Nice people work there who are quite responsive. 3: Good amount of space for the price. 4: Decent workable small kitchen with the typical small washer/dryer combo. 5: Decent livingroom with color TV.
The Bad: 1: Building built in the 70's I would guess and never renovated with furniture of same age. 2: Awful beds on cheap platforms with mattresses worse than the 12 year old one of my daughter's that we just replaced.
3: Lots of broken fixtures such as closet handles, toasters, and window mechanism. Given screw driver to close one window. 4: Hot water sufficent for a 3 minute shower per hour. Each unit has it's own hot water system. Not a problem perhaps if you do not bathe much or if one of you bathes in the morning and one at night. When 4 people want to bath at night it is a major problem. 5: Fairly clean but old with a strange smell that made us buy scented candles.
London is known for the uneven quality of it's hotels/apartments but my dormitory rooms while at University in the UK were nicer than the Scala and my bedsitter when I used to live in the city was even nicer. The Scala actually reminds me abit of a slum apartment I once lived in as a student in West Philadelphia except my apartment had decent hot water, had a decent bed/boxspring on the floor and did not smell.
