Stay in Koblenz or Cochem?
Hi all. We are a family of 4 wanting to stay 2 nights the Mosel area not too far from Frankfurt. We want to see Burg Eltz and maybe do a brief river trip. (When we were in Vienna, we did a day trip on the Danube and would like to do something like that in this area, if possible - any suggestions/insight on that would be welcome, too).
Any hotel suggestions for quad rooms (preferably with A/C or is it OK without?)
Thanks - I'm just starting our planning and am looking at finalizing a rough itinerary. We will be in Germany in June.

Koblenz is a large, mostly modern city. Cochem is a much smaller and far more atmospheric old-world village at the core. I'd stay in Cochem, where you could do a river outing to Beilstein and back (about an hour each way) and where you'd be within a stone's throw of Burg Eltz. The train gets you from Cochem to Moselkern in 15 minutes; walk from there:

Cochem's Reichsburg Castle is right in town and also worth visiting; try to catch one of the free-flight falconry shows on the castle grounds (11:00, 1:00, 2:30, 4:00, closed Mon.)

Try to stay in the old town area for proximity to the station and the most atmosphere. Quad rooms are a rarity. You'd be better off in a B&B with two rooms or in an apartment.

The most impressive river cruise is the Rhine cruise - many castles, villages, and great river scenery. You could make it part of your trip to Cochem. Take the train to Bingen, cruise north from there to St. Goar (1.5 hours) and continue by train from there to Cochem. The cruises on the Mosel are pleasant but somewhat less impressive.

I also would like to thank Russ for this great information, especially getting to Burg Eltz by train!!
We will be in the area early fall next year, and have chosen Cochem as our base, as it is a beautiful town and a good transportation hub.

Hi Karens,
Our family of four stayed in Cochem at the Hotel Haus Sonnscheine in April one year. We drove into town and selected the hotel based on looks and location. (At that time of year we had our pick.) This hotel was situated right on the river and overlooked a castle. We were pleasantly pleased to have a room to accommodate the four of us and it included a walkout private rooftop patio overlooking the river and castle. Hotel also had a restaurant which served a good meal.
Happy travels!
