station wagons: opel astra vs. renault laguna

I ask the same question asked a few months back. My problem has to do with luggage trunk/boot. But we are only two people in the car with three full size bags and two carry ons. The Opel Astra in Brussels is significantly cheaper than the Laguna. I want to know whether I can store all the luggage so that it will not be visible to a thief. Also is there any significant difference in comfort and/or ease of driving the Laguna vs the Astra

You may not get either---you contract for a class of cars.

If you get the Laguna, I think you'll be happy with it. We've rented them several times.

we had an Opel station wagon (I think an Astra) last winter and I wasn't impressed. It had the pick up of a lawn mower, used unleaded as opposed to diesel and went through fuel like our Chevy Suburban. It's the only car I've ever rented in Europe that I didn't like. It did hold a lot of luggage (2 big bags and a ski bag as well as carryons), but other than that, there was nothing to recommend it.

I wouldn't get too exercised about this issue - the rental firm will give you what they have when you turn up.

I rented an Astra and was happy with it. Sure, its humbling when volkwagons pass you with ease, but the Opel is a fine car. As far luggage, it was visible(I cant remember why, but remember somebody had to wait with th ecar when we stopped). Another time we got the Renault scenic with just three 22 in cases, and it wasnt visible

Hi C,

I once had the misfortune of being given an Astra.

Awwwwwwwfffffffuuuuuuulllllll.

OTOH, a Laguna was a very nice car to drive.

Enjoy your visit.

Thanks to all for the information and advice. From the replies of telechick and FrankS, it's clear that the Astra is not for me. With only two of us, we don't want to take turns standing guard. And even if I don't actually get a Laguna, I guess that that is the class that I need, even if it costs more.

Thanks again
