I have been planning on starting in Cappadocia after 5 nights in Istanbul then working my way southwest and back up to Izmir to fly back to Istanbul. However I just found that if I rent my car to start in Izmir it is significantly less money. This is late April early May, does it really matter switching directions and going down coast to start?
Start Izmir instead of Cappadocia?

I do not think it will make much of a difference.
You will have a great deal of flexibility after landing at Izmir airport because you may not need to reserve lodging due to the pre-season ease of availability. This will give you the chance to spend your time as you wish rather than be dictated by early reservations.
the only reservations you need will be at Cappadocia.
Consider Nazhan or Bella at Selcuk.
