Hi all. This is one of the break down of my trip. Does this make sense?
Or should i stay at Berchtesgaden for 1 night?

Day 1 : SALZBURG
Day 2 : Day trip to St. Wolfgang & Hallstatt
Day 3 : Day trip to Berchtesgaden & Königssee
Day 4 : SALZBURG
Day 5 : SALZBURG

iamcaren,

Berchtesgaden is just west of Salzburg. You should have no problem staying in Salzburg to see all of the destinations that you have listed.

Have car or going by public transit, which is super good and easy for those places from Salzburg.

Direct S-Bahn trains to Berchtesgaden now I believe - anyway not far just over the mountain

Hallstatt and the Lakes are too much in one day - do the Lakes en route to Hallstatt - postal bus to St Wolfgang (about 1.5 hours) and then bus to nearby Bad Ischl to catch train to Hallstatt - have to stay here to appreciate it - the best things are outside the lovely town.

For lots of info on transports to these and info on them check www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com

Dear wnappier & PalenQ,
Thanks for the input. Will be travelling by public transport.
Can you advise further?
1. Which area to stay in Salzburg?
2. Stay in Hallstatt for one night, or do it as day trip separately?

The beauty of Hallstatt will be more evident after the day trippers leave so I would suggest that you spend one night at a hotel with a balcony facing the lake.

From Salzburg you could stop in St. Wolfgang on your way down to Hallstatt.

In Salzburg, stay in the old town.

Either one would be finer than doing Hallstatt with the Lakes in one day.

By train -Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim -change to train to Hallstatt- station across the lake from town center and boat or bus over across the idyllic lake. This will take about 2 hours each way I believe- quicker than via bus thru Lake District.
