Hello,
I'm trying to decide on a hotel to stay for two nights in the St Gilgen/Hallstatt area.
Looking for the most luxurious and romantic in a small town setting.
Please help.

Mike---There is no doubt in my mind, after having been to both places several times, that Hallstatt wins the prize for a "romantic small town setting." Unfortunately, if you stay right on the lake or the lovely little square in Hallstatt, you won't find a really "luxurious" hotel. The best hotel, which is really as fancy as most people want but not in the "luxury" class, is the Gruner Baum, right on the lake. Get a room with a balcony overlooking the lake and enjoy the incredible scenery.
I don't mean to put down St. Gilgen, but it simply doesn't have the unique appeal of Hallstatt. It is indeed a pretty town, and in its own way just as much a small town; but when you see the smallness of "downtown" Hallstatt, you will be totally charmed.
Mike, I agree with Wayne about staying at the Seehotel Gruner Baum. We were just there in May and had a lake view room with a huge terrace. It was an awesome view. Their restaurant also has very good food. Will stay there again on our next trip.
