St. David's Hotel or Marriott in Cardiff?

Looking for two nights in Cardiff the end of May. Only one pound difference between the Marriott and St. David's. We love being on the water, but is the location not so good for sightseeing if we stay at St. David's? We will have a car if that makes a difference.

Hi Patrick, sorry don't know about the two hotels you mention but a friend of mine recommends the Angel Hotel in Cardiff (aside from the fact he knew I would approve of the name)
Don't know the website but there are loads of discount hotel companies offering the hotel if you do a google search.

If you or any others are planning on being in Cardiff the weekend of 22nd May, don't forget that our F.A. Cup Final will be held there on that date!
Cardiff will be busy but should be a good atmosphere. Main thing is that a lot of hotels may get provisionally booked by lots of football supporters hoping that 'their' team will get through - just judging on last year when I tried to do the same hoping my team would get into the play-off finals.
Couldn't get a hotel anywhere, but we just missed out and didn't need it anyway

No, we already changed our itinerary to the last week of May to avoid the FA Cup, which I discovered when I could only find "through the roof" hotel prices for that weekend.

Still looking for a comparison of St. David's and Marriott.

By the way the rates we have at the two hotels I mentioned are 114 and 115 pounds. The lowest I found from a number of sites for the Angel Hotel was something like 160 pounds.

St David's would get my vote as it is a better hotel with superior facilities. Rocco Forte Hotels are excellent. Also if you love the water then this is a great location as it is right on the waterfront in Cardiff Bay.

The Marriott's only advantage is the location, being closer to the shops, castle etc. However, as you have a car I would opt for the St David's and just park where and when needed in car parks.

Thank you London Mike. It sure looks like a nice hotel on the website. Is there anything within walking distance of St. Davids or will we need to drive to go see the castle, etc.?

Hello Patrick, I see you are still looking in Cardiff!
Even though I have never stayed in the St. David's everyone I know who's been there says it is the tops.It is usually quite a lot more expensive than the Marriott so if it is only £1 difference I'd go for it.
The things people mention specifically are the spa and restaurant.
I don't think you will be able to walk from there to Cardiff but driving and parking will not be a problem

Yes, actually I had booked the Marriott a month or more ago, but one day I discovered this rate of 115 for a room at St. Davids. This was just after reading that it is the only "five star quality" hotel in Cardiff or some such thing. In any case, I booked it and right now have both reservations. I suspect there may eventually be a better price for the Marriott between now and the end of May when we're going. We're not into the spa, but the setting on the water looks great and all rooms supposedly have a balcony and face the water.

Hi Patrick,

I don't know if this may be a bit late for you now, but l would personally go for the Marriott. The St Davids Hotel is a fantastic hotel for luxury, and it is Cardiff's only 5* Hotel. However it's location is in my eyes far from perfect. The Cardiff Bay area is very new and modern, and while it is a nice place to visit, much of it is still being redeveloped, meaning a lot of building work.

The St Davids Hotel is also nearby the Grangetown area of Cardiff, which is renouned as an area where you find youths hanging round cars at night, and graffiti problems etc. I would not feel safe walking around this area at night, however don't let this put you off the hotel itself as it is a fantastic hotel, just the location is a bit dodgy.

The Marriott hotel is located on Mill Lane which is the Cafe quarter of Cardiff. It is a nice area, with pleanty of nice restaurants and bars nearby. The shops are literally 5 minutes walking distance, and it is also 5 minutes from the Millennium Stadium. You can also pick up a bus from outside the hotel to the Bay area, where the St Davids hotel is located.

Hope this gives you a bit of help in deciding where to stay, and if you need any more help, feel free to post a message.
