Penny: can you give us an idea of price per person, without wine?

La Maison Courtine on Rue du Maine in Paris is excellent. When we were last in Paris we sought out "the best restaurant with a Michelin star at the lowest price" and we were advised (on this board) to try La Maison Courtine. The service was wonderful (I don't think Michelin gives any stars to restaurants with indifferent service, no matter how good the food), there was a little flavor of the neighborhood, and the food was great. I think our meal for two was in the vicinity of 100-120 euros with starter glasses of champagne and a bottle of wine in addition to the fixed price menu. Happy birthday, friend of Penny!

Hi PT,

>a special restaurant ... with great atmosphere and food that is not toooo expensive??

Which two of the three are most important?

What is the budget?

I've not eaten here in years, but have heard good things more recently. A lovely location on the Place de Vosges and reasonable prices. Might be worth checking out..curious if anyone has recent experience:

Oh, I just love La Guirlande de Julie - that's a good suggestion!

Also La Fontaine de Mars and for a classic French brasserie experience, Bofinger (you can get a coupon online for a 10% discount).

Jules Verne, window table, would certainly be memorable...and to save money, go for lunch instead of dinner.

Hi Peeny - tell us what your friends likes are. paris has so many great options in all price ranges. For example if the love modern, chic, excellent food and a good view, there is aCafe George at the top of Pompidou. Another cool venue is 404 a moroccan casbah like place that serves the best food I have had outside of Africa. some might not like that spin while n Paris. There are many classics, Bofinger, La Guirlande and even other that can be special for less money. It's all about what they might like, tell us more.

Thanks again everyone. To expand on my request---it would be good to have a courtyard to sit in as it will be July and/or a view would be nice too.As we will be very noisy a more relaxed place would also be good. The type of food is not too important as long as it is good! The key thing is that it needs to be memorable!!

I'm posting the kind of reply that bugs me (giving advice that isn't based on first-hand experience), so my apologies if it bugs you too . . . .

That said, my 50th birthday is in three weeks and I have been planning on being in Paris with my wife. After doing a fair amount of research and trying to figure out what would fit my mood (the celebratory part, not the mid-life crisis part), we settled on Le Florimond. After seeing it discussed in several places, it seemed to meet my criteria (not necessarily your friend's, though):

I'm looking for something comfortable and relaxed, good food, in a relatively friendly atmosphere. I don't want to spend a whole paycheck on a meal, and don't tend to go for meals that are spectacles anyway. And I don't want to pack an Armani tux and top hat.

A friend recommended Le Florimond, and the reviews I've seen here and elsewhere on the web seem to confirm that it should be more than satisfactory.

Lawchick - tell me more about restaurant du Palais-Royal. Where is it? I've stayed in apartment in the Palais Royal, maybe I've missed the restaurant???

Penny (got it right this time). I have an idea. How about lunch at Cafe George (great club sandwiches and yummy penne). A walk around the Marais and dinner at Ma Bourgonne in Place de Voges, The view from George is grand and it's very modern/chic. Dinner at an outdoor table with classic french bistro food would be a nice balance. And, the total cost would be that of just the one meal out for dinner in a higher end restaurant....just a thought... make a day of it!!
