Spanish Language/Vocabulary Help
I'm trying to figure out what the Spanish call those little wheeled fabric shopping baskets? The kind that you roll to the store to take your groceries home in or to go to the laundry? Also, does anyone know where the best place to buy one is? Do they sell them at the grocery store? Our apartment is on Carrer Enrique Granados north of the University and I'm not even sure where the closes large supermarket is, or if there even is one.
Anyway, I really would like something cheap to help me carry back groceries. I don't want to sling anything on my back or shoulders because I have an injury.
I just need to buy one for our visit and I don't want to spend a lot of money since we're leaving it in the apartment. What should I expect to pay for it?
Kind of like this, but I've used them in Italy where the sides were fabric. I just need to know it's proper name! http://www.kaboodle.com/hi/img/2/0/0...AAAAAKA-Nw.jpg

You can use www.paginasamarillas.es for finding shops or other services in the vicinity of your apartment.
Click on tab "Buscar próximos a..." and fill out the form:
Actividad/Producto/Marca: supermercado
Nombre de Empresa: leave blank
Provincia: Madrid
Localidad: Madrid
Tipo de Vía: Carrer
Nombre de Vía: Enrique Granados
Número: fill in number or leave blank
Radio de búsqueda: choose a search radius in meters
You will find one grocery store in 200 meters distance, and more large-scale supermarket at around 400m.
Chances are good that you will find even more smaller neighborhood grocery stores nearby since those do not always get listed with Yellow Pages.

I'm sure El Corte ingles will have one. You could also try a drogueria or even one of those cheapie shops, what people here in barcelona call "los chinos".
The area round Ninot market seems to me a good bet (eg corner Mallorca with Casanova there's a housewares shop).Enric Granados is already getting to be more upmarket but Carrer Valencia has a good mix of shops in that area.Otherwise Esclat hypermarket (44 bus takes you there, it's by Sants station)
Well I'm assuming you're in Barcelona if the street is north of the university!

Thanks for all of your advice. I asked the apartment if they had one and they said no. I also asked if they would provide one and they could add the price to our bill, no to that too.
Here is the address, maybe someone knows a good grocery store near by? Something as large as possible that will have a good selection of dry cereal? i know that sounds weird but that's all my hubby eats for breakfast!
Carrer D'Enric Granados 23, principal-2Š, 08007 Barcelona
Looks like it's about a block north of the University or so.

Try using TinyUrl http://tinyurl.com/
That will take one of those hugely long URLs and make a short one that fits the Fodors site better.

hi guilia,
by this loooks of this and your other [french] post, you're planning on doing a lot of shopping.
When we arrive at an apartment and suss out what we need, we do one big shop of things we need then and there. a couple of kids are useful at this point - I'm sure ours would like a trip to france and spain if you can't provide your own.
after that, to cut down on the weight of what we need to buy, we try to make a shopping list every time we go out, and buy it little by little.
I have to say that we have found that what we actually need immediately has shrunk over the years, and we tend to buy stuff as we are actually going to use it. most of the time, we are going to be eating out, AS WE ARE ON HOLIDAY.
for the laundry over the years I've collected a couple of very big strong plastic bags which live in our suitcases for use as laundry bags. they are big enough to take whatever we'll need to have washed during a holiday. repeat - holiday.
regards, ann

Have you ever thought about packing a small amount of cereal, sugar, coffee and filters, whatever...to get you started off the first day.
You can always find a small local place for the milk, water, etc....big shopping later.
I always pack some of this stuff, along with some ziplock bags for storing cheese, ham, etc. and always a very small small bottle of dish detergent which is good for a week.

Giulia, check if you can find a Mercadona near the apartment (you should, I think). Far better prices than the Corte Ingles, and a great selection.

Thanks for the input! Yes, I always pack a few necessities like the ziploc baggies, Splenda (which seems to be non-existent in europe), etc. I don't bring laundry detergent because i know those tiny apartment washers are fickle and only like the little soap cubes. I believe the apartment may come with the staples, coffee, tea, etc. I know it sounds like we will be shopping a lot, but I LOVE to shop in european grocery stores, it's as fun to me as going to the tourist attractions because I love to cook. We are going to eat breakfast in and probably light dinners in on some nights. We really splurge at lunch so that seems to balance things out. Fortunately, one of the reasons I chose this apartment was that it has a washer and a dryer (also uncommon), so that will help with not having to schlep the laundry around town.
Thanks so much for the names of the grocery stores!

Giulia,
Sorry for displacing your apt. from Barcelona to Madrid. Guess I was too stupid to read your OP.
Your next supermarket will be "Caprabo" on Consell de Cent. From your apt. walk south to next intersection, turn east for half a block. 1-2 min walking time, I assume.
