Spain to France Itenerary Question: Plane or Train

Hi! I am an exchange student who will be staying in France starting late Aug. Before classes start I'm planning to take a trip in Spain, so Madrid, Barcelona and Seville are my choices right now. I will have to arrive in Paris first, however, because my visa requires me to.

My question is, is it better to fly to Spain and back to Paris? Or is it better to take the train? Thank you!

You can find some really cheap fares on discount airlines like Vueling but the low fares are for little or no luggage. The cost rises quickly as you add services. I would price it carefully, taking into account how much luggage you'll actually carry and see what the cost is.

A train will usually be cheaper and you can bring along as much luggage as you can handle, it seems (I just took the TGV between Paris and Avignon). You can find high speed trains between Paris and Madrid or Barcelona.

If my stay was brief and I could make it with just a single carry-on I'd probably take Vueling (or similar) ... but otherwise I'd probably take the train.

Here are two sites we found helpful (essential?) for using the trains in France on our recent vacation:

http://www.seat61.com/ (used this site to pick our seats and for helpful general info)

https://www.capitainetrain.com/search/ (this is who we used to actually purchase the TGV tix ... tip of the cap to Stu Dudley for first mentioning it)

Here is the Vueling site ... there are other discount airlines but we've used this one twice for trips between Barcelona and Bilbao/Donostia with good results:
http://www.vueling.com/en

Paris to Madrid by train takes 10 hours. Fly Vueling.

yes, the cost rises to check luggage on discount airlines, but not that much and the rates are still extremely low.

We are French living in the Pyrenees between Toulouse and Spain : take the plane and not the train. (Vueling, Easyjet). The train journey is too long and will cost you the same price if not more expensive than flying. Bon Voyage ! Have a nice trip !
