Spain summer 2009
We are in the preliminary stages of planning a trip to Spain in June/July. How early should we make hotel reservations? I know this is the peak season so I am sure that rooms will fill fast. When do hotels begin booking for the summer?

It's not usually very difficult to find lodging for Jun/Jul a month or two in advance; it depends on what part(s) of Spain you plan to visit.
Summer 'Peak' season begins 16 Jul (Virgen de Carmen) and lasts thru early September.
I can't tell you when hotels begin booking for the Summer. It depends on location and what's happening like Pamplona for los San Fermines (7 Jul).
If it were me, I would work on my itinerary now and begin seriously booking just after Easter (i.e., Semana Santa).

A few hotels have already posted their summer 09 rates, but most will not be ready to post their rates until the first of the year. Depending on the type of accommodation you're seeking, you shouldn't have any problem waiting until early January.
One thing you may want to take note of is that the current economic situation has had an impact on tourism throughout most of Europe, including Spain. Most hotels have seen their bookings drop this summer and may be looking to adjust their rates downward for the Spring and Summer 09 seasons, or at least maintain this year's prices.
