Spain & Portugal Cost of Food/Wine in Supermarkets

Jump to last reply

We are going to visit Madrid and Lisbon in two weeks time. Does anyone know the costs of food i.e Bread/cheese/pasta etc and Spanish Red wine in the markets/supermarkets? We will be self-catering so want to know the approximate cost of groceries, not restaurant food/wine! Also what is the bus fare to and from the Airport to Grand Via?
Has anyone caught the train from Madrid to Lisbon ? If so how much did it cost?
PLease respond ASAP. Urgent Questions!!!!
Thankyou
Julian & Stephanie

Returned three days ago from Spain. There are discount supermarket chains like Dia where prices are rock bottom, though choice is limited. Then there are other middle-range chains like Caprabo and food section in department stores like El Corte Ingles, and a few hipermarkets on the outskirts with a huge range (normally needing cars). As for prices, you'd pay around 170 pts for a loaf of sliced bread (90cents), a baquette around 100 pts (50cents), cheese around 1000 pts per kilo ($2.40 per lb). Drinkable table wine from around 170 pts a 75 cl bottle (90cents), something better from around 400 pts ($2.10). Pasta from around 100 pts a kilo (24cents per lb). I don't have up-to-date prices for Portugal, but I expect them to be similar, though the stores there tend to be smaller and choice more limited. One thing I found in Spain is the quality of fruit and vegetables on display isn't as high as in UK or US, and you need to choose them very carefully to avoid bruised or perishing products.
Bus fare from Madrid Barajas Airport to underground Plaza Colon bus station is 400 pts. Or you can take metro pink #8 from the airport, change at Mar de Cristal to brown #4 and finally at A Martinez to green #5 to Gran Via. Fare 145 pts, though if you have a lot of luggage, you may prefer the bus and a cab from Pl Colon.
There is a range of fares for the Lusitania Trainhotel between Madrid and Lisbon. Check your requirement at:

    Bon voyage!
