Visiting Malaga, we did a one day trip to Granada, via bus....esasy, cheap , without any problem. Can't remember if train is mre expensive, but bus was easy and takes not too long. We spent a beautiful day in Granada, which we already know .
Malaga is beautiful an. A good base to visit Marbella, Nerja, Granada, and of course Malaga itself, charming city, good museums and excellent pedestrian zone.
Enjoy your stay!

Trains I believe run a round about route due to mountains - buses go more direct and even full fare is often as cheap or cheaper than a discounted rail ticket that typically has to be booked weeks in advance to get and then is often non-changeable non-refundable.
I've driven between the two and it is a nice at times mountainous, kind of, road.
