May should be wonderful weather for Spain, warm but before the unbearable heat sets in. Do you return to Madrid or can you add on at the beginning of the trip? To me, the best of Spain is south of Madrid -- Seville, Cordoba, Granada, Arcos and Ronda. I'm not one to relax on the beach (since I'm in Florida near one), but there is so much to see and do around Barcelona and even more in southern Spain. Do a search of this site for Spain and you'll find lots of recent posts about things and places. Then ask us some more specifics.

Just got back from Spain. Spent 2 days in Madrid, 2 in Barcelona and 3 in Mallorca. Barcelona was amazing. The architecture was incredible everywhere. Picasso Museum is a must in Barcelona. The only was regret was that I wished I spent more time in Barcelona, but the Island of Mallorca was a nice ending to a rush and see everything beginning. Did not have any problems with pick pockets and people were very understanding of our limited Spanish.

Enjoy!!

Take a side trip from Barcelona to Fugueres. There is an awesome Dali museum that will knock your socks off!
It doesn't matter whether or not you like Dali. Just go.

Just returned from Spain a couple of days ago and had an amazing time!! We starting in Madrid then to Seville, Granada and Barcelona. From Madrid, we took day trips to Segovia and Toledo. Both trips easy to get to by bus (inexpensive) and well worth it.

If you want to do some research go to www.Madridman.com. It is an informative site all about Spain, especially Madrid.

Like the other posting said, I enjoyed Southern Spain the most...Seville and Granada. The Alhambra in Granada is breathtaking!!! I only wished I have more time to visit Corodoba, Malaga and Ronda.

Barcelona is a big city with alot of character. You must visit Las Ramblas. I would suggest getting a hotel / hostel just off Las Ramblas if you want some sleep. It is a very busy, noisy and lively street.

The architecture in Barcelona is a must see... Sagrada Familia, Parque Guell...all of them.

There are many things to do depending on your interests.

Have a great time in Spain.

Took me 20 years to convince my husband to travel abroad. Thank goodness our 1st trip was to Spain now he has the bug, going back to europe for Thanksgiving Italy this trip. You will love Spain, We toured by car country northwest of Madrid, stayed at great Paradoers, convereted historial buildings into first class hotels. Our next trip will be to Barcelona our friends all say it's wonderful. If you love the coast go east from Madrid. Spain countryside is spotless and friendly locals. Very affordable outside the big cities. Have a great one!

May is great in Spain, chances of showers is little. The cherry trees are also in full bloom. Madrid has countless small restaurant snack bars where a tapa and a glass of wine is great for a snack.Barcelona is beautiful
hotels are usually good.Since the dollar is high in Europe, i will go to a hotel five stars, it is worth it.Have a good trip.

I think May is probably the best month to visit Andalucia. Cordoba, Sevilla and Jerez have their fairs, the countryside is green and the weather mild. Other places: Granada, Ronda, Grazalema, Arcos, Cadiz, Carmona, Sierra Nevada, Antequera and El Torcal, Cazorla.....

I agree with Patrick (above) We sprnt almost a month from Madrid to Costa del Sol driving about 1500 km.
If you would like me to send you a copy of a "trip report" I made for a friend who is thinking about visiting Spain. I would be glad to send you a copy by internet or snail mail. Contact me at my e-mail address.

If you are going to Madrid in mid-May you will be able to attend the public events in honor of the festivities for San Isidro. Big parties, great concerts at Plaza Mayor every night (not that Spaniards need an excuse to party....).

After you've seen the sights of Barcelona as has been mentioned, and you have time, an excellent beach area is San Sebastian on the Cantabrian coast, norteast of Barcelona and near the French border. Magnificent scenic beach. The Hotel Londres y de Inglaterra is right on the beach (La Concha.) Their restaurant is also quite good.
I don't know how the weather is there in May. We were just there in Sept and it was great.
We made a long drive from Barcelona stopping along the way at Montserrat (recommended) to San Sebastian. I probably would not do that again, but would break up the trip perhaps staying in Zaragosa.
Buen viaje
