Spain and Portugal - when to Go
My husband and I are planning a trip Portugal and Spain next year - 2017.
We are planning to fly into Barcelona, and after visiting for 5 days, plan to hire a car to get around.
This year we were in Italy in august and it was so very busy. It seemed as if all of Italy was on holiday in Sorrento when we were there.
So now planning next year I am thinking September would be a better time. But looking at hotel prices, September seems to be even more expensive than august.
Have others found this to be true?
also I have been on Bookings.com and looked at some hotels in Portugal for September and some are coming up with 'with no availability', as the last room has been booked.
I know that we are talking 11 months away, but how far in advance should i be booking.
I had no trouble with booking for august 4 months earlier.
I am wondering if there is something about the month of September I do not know about.

The "No availability" message that you're getting may just be that the booking site has no release of rooms yet for September 2017, or even that they have sold their allocation. In the latter case try the hotel direct and check.
Which cities after BCN are you looking at? The other thing worth mentioning is that if you're planning to take a hire car into Portugal from Spain, it may be that:
The rental company won't allow it
There will be a big drop off fee for a one way rental
If yours is a round trip back to BCN they may not allow you to take a Spanish rental into another country.

We went in mid-june in Portugal and the weather was fresh. Too cold to swim in the sea and needed a pullover in the evenings. Not many tourists.
The 100 years apparition will have an impact but limited in the region of Fatima.
Not many hotels open their reservations so far in advance.
Did you try calling them ?

Is September a fixed time for your trip ? I think late April into May and October are the ideal times to travel there. Sept. can be still very hot, even for Barcelona. My daughter was in Rome in Sept. It was so hot and SO crowded that she was turned off the whole country. Spain can be the same in Sept.
