spain 9 days
Hi,
We have only 9 days in Spain (not counting coming & going). We could do open jaw ticket. Places on our potential list include: Barcelona (only 2 days), Seville, Granada, Merida, Caceres, Cuenca, Segovia. Is this even doable? Suggestions? What would people prioritize & why? Best itinerary? Thanks for any advice!

That's a lot of country to cover in such a short time. You need to concentrate on one area that's doable. If you are going in late winter to late Spring, or late summer to late Fall, then you can cover the area from Granada and Sevilla (Andalucia) or Merida and Cáceres (Extremadura), but not both.
Segovia and Cuenca are in two different directions out of Madrid and should be included in another itinerary. Either can be combined with a trip to Spain’s capital.

A tall order for a week or so: You could do the Todo Preferente overnight Talgo sleeper Barcelona-Sevilla (Dep. 22:30; arr. 08:20) to get from one to another comfortably (although costly). As for Extremadura: you can go Sevilla-Badajoz by bus and then work your way back to Madrid (Caceres, Merida, Cuenca). If you can find a rental car in Badajoz, your Extremadura loop may be convenient (drop-off in Madrid).
Segovia is a daytrip from Madrid.
I didn't fit Granada in because it's more than a daytrip from Sevilla - you could try it ...

what month are you going? is this your first visit to Spain? what is your prefered mode of transport? (would you rent a car?), what type of vacation pace you'll preferred? how many people in your party? what is the age range of people in your party? These are all answers I would need to have to even begin answering your questions in a meaningful way.
Off the bat, I would say that I would pick a region and explore; i.e. Barcelona and Costa Dorada, Andalucia and Costa del Sol, Santiago and Costa Verde, etc... For a first timer to Spain, I would suggest start with Andalucia unless you are travelling July through September.
I would strongly suggest you post with some added details; otherwise to provide advice would be like shooring in the dark

Hi,
Sorry, did not give enough details. (And, meanwhile, accidentally reposted because I didn't see my posting...doesn't really speak well for my attention to detail!)Anyway: we are a couple (male & female); both 40; both first time to Spain; traveling mid-October; he is especially interested in history; he tends to want to pack in seeing as much as possible; I'm fairly go-go-go but don't want to spend so much time in transit that we don't get to enjoy any place; can do open-jaw ticket; can rent car but prefer train/bus where convenient; both speak Spanish; budget is not unlimited but neither are we on the backpackers' budget and we recognize this is a rare trip--might be only time we get to do this. (Hope not). Thanks for advice.
