Does anyone know what the options are for taking a boat across the Adriatic from Slovenia to Venice or nearby? So far all I can find are expensive, tourist-geared catamarans.

The cheap, easy way is to take a bus to Trieste then a train to Venezia. There is no boat service in winter and no reason for a non-tourist to take a boat when there's a cheaper alternative.
The catamaran from Slovenia is the PRINCE OF VENICE
