Where in Andalucia do you plan on travelling?
Spain has a great, extensive bus system-and you will usually find it to be as fast and a bit cheaper than taking trains--unless you are taking the fast AVE trains.
I dont see a problem not having a car unless you want to go to real rural areas...but where are you going?

I like to go to Seville and Jerez in southern Spain because I dance flamenco. However, being a native New Yorker, driving is out of question, and I don't speak a word of Spanish. Is it possible to travel in these towns by train? How safe is it for a single woman? I had originally wanted to go to Morrocco, but was strongly adviced against it by my travel agent.

Thanks again for your reply.

Okay-you can take a bus from sevilla to jerez. Fo to the bus station (called San sebastion) there are probably 5-10 busses going from sevilla to Jerez depending on the day. The trip is probably about an hour and will cost about $12.
If you want a train from Sevilla to jerez go to the Santa Justa train station and there are about 12 trains a day (again 1 hr) and about $15. However, depending on the time, you might want to make a reservation.
I have heard the same about Morocco. I am going to Spain, Portugal, and maybe Morocco. I am a 21 yr old woman travelling alone-i speak some spanish. People are very friendly in spain and you shouldn't have problems. Just learn some common words.
Any other questions?

Hi
I dont think my message showed up so i'll try again.
If you want to take the train from sevilla to Jerz you can go to estacion san sebastin on plaza san sebastion. THere are about 5-10 busses a day depending on the day. It will probably cost abou$10-$12.
Otherwise the train station is called Santa Justa (i dont remeber where it is) but there are trains all day -probably 15 or so that go from sevilla to Jerez and it will cost around $15 dollars.
THe trip takes around an hour.
About Morocco-I think the advice you got is good. I have never been there but got the same advice. I am a 21 female travelling spain, portugal, and maybe Morocco this summer (middle june through August)-and feel pretty good about it-but wont go to morocco alone. Spanish people are wonderful, friendly and helpful. Just learn a couple phrases and words and you'll be fine.
Any other questions?

Thanks a lot for the advice. I've been traveling alone for years and have been to Madrid several times. If you decide to go to Morrocco, let me know how things went. Thanks again.

I spent two months in Sevilla a few years ago and travelled to near by cities by bus. I found the bus to by cheaper than the train, more comfortable and more senic. I travelled to Jerez, Cordoba,Granada, and Rhonda and a few other small spots that aren't even on the map. For great sight seeing I would recommend Granada and Rhonda. The Alhambra in Granada is breath taking and the city offers many choices for eating and sleeping. Rhonda was smaller but more quaint. The city was built on the edge of a cliff and is fasinating. Rhonda also boast the oldest bull fighting ring in Spain. Both towns are a must see in my opinion. I also travelled to Portugal, Tavira (I think) was the
name of the town. It was a small fishing town on the south coast and it truly was heavan on earth, one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Not much to do there but eat great food, drink and enjoy the beach. Life seems to stand still there. In regards to Monacco, I have to agree with the advice you have received. I really wanted to travel there myself since I was only two hours away but was strongly advised not to by the locals I had met while in Sevilla. I heard it isn't even that nice. Hope this info helps. Have a great trip and bring sun screen!!

Thanks a bunch guys for all the great info. I am having trouble securing a hotel for seville for one particular night, so I think I'll go off to Grenada as advised. Really appreciate all the response.
