I am trying to plan a trip to either France or Spain for the Spring. I just found a great airfare to Madrid for mid-March.

What would the weather be like in the south/hill towns in mid-March? (Toledo, Granada, etc)?

We were in Spain mid to late March last year. Madrid was sunny and cool, in the high 50's. Seville was in the low 80's with all the oranges trees in bloom. In the hill towns, it was partly sunny, some rain, and in the high 60's. Granada was lots of rain, in the 50's, and Nerja was mostly sunny, in the low 70's.

We were also in Southern Spain in late March and had a mix of weather. The weather can vary anywhere (we once had hail in San Diego when we were visiting in Jan.) Check out weatherunderground.com and do an history search and you can at least get an idea of trends.

You do realize that neither Madrid nor Toledo are in southern Spain? (I think you were just talking about flying into Madrid and travelling from there because that's where your cheap airfare takes you to.)

I was in Madrid and Barcelona in early April a few years ago. Both cities were pleasant (mostly sunny, probably 14-20C) but not hot. Sevilla, Cordoba and/or Cadiz might be a better bet.

Be careful with the timing of your trip. You said mid-March. Santa Semana (Holy Week) is March 20-27. It will be quite a spectacle (in Sevilla, in particular) - but this also may mean huge crowds, higher prices, inconvenience (e.g. some restaurants, shops and attractions may be closed), etc. Unless you really really want to see the celebrations, you'll want to plan your trip in Spain around these dates to avoid the crowds.

KateW- Thanks for the georaphic clarification. Yes, I am planning on flying into Madrid, maybe seeing Toledo, and then procedding south to Seville and Granada.
2 days madrid, 2 days seville, then on to the white villages for 2 days, ending with a night in Grenada before flying home.

Weather is obviously something outside your control. Go with the flow. If its cold and rainy, head into the Sierre Nevada for some of the best skiing in Europe. I believe the 2002 World Alpine Ski Championships were there. Its Spain's version of Vail so go with it. If your not skiers, hang out in the lodge by the fire or book a horse drawn sleigh ride.

we have been to southern spain several times in early April - and it has always been comfortable to warm - 70's and 80's during the day - but it hit 90 by the time we left. Can;t imagine it will be much cooler.

I was there this past March (3/13-3/21)...it was cold in the morning, but by mid-day, it was warm enough to walk around without a jacket. Dunno about Southern Spain...yet...

Don't maybe see Toledo, DEFINITELY SEE Toledo. My friend wasn't too keen on seeing it, but I was curious & I won the coin toss. Toledo (and Segovia) was well worth the trip...if you have the time. My next stops are Seville and Granada.
