My girlfriend, her six year old daughter and I will be flying into and out of Madrid for 10 days in mid-March,2010 - can I get suggestions which will make it easier to travel with a young
child? e.g.: destinations, activities, accommodating late-night restaurant hours, public transportation, festivals/carnivals, kid-friendly parks, not-too-expensive family-run accommodations? Thank you, Tom

Nothing specific to Spain but just some ideas that worked well for my 6 yr old granddaughter in Paris this year: she and I chose pictures of things she wanted to see in Paris, and I photocopied them to take with us. We used them as a kind of "scavenger hunt" activity, and that was fun for her. We found most of the pictures in kids' books about Paris so they were stylized pictures of Notre Dame, ET, etc.; regular pictures from adult guide books would work, too. However, if you can find kids' book about your destinations that makes it even more fun.
Also she began drawing pictures and collecting memorabilia ( ticket stubs, tiny paper napkins, post cards, etc.) the minute the plane took off; she, with some help, assembled these into a very cute scrapbook when she got home. Take markers, paper, etc. with you; she can start out right away by drawing a picture of the airplane. Also, take pictures at the airport, her on the plane, etc.
Since it was only a week-long trip, we didn't worry about keeping regular bedtimes, and she did well with that. Some kids may need more structured hours. She loved riding on the metro, putting her ticket in the turnstile, etc, just simple little things like that. We stayed in an apartment, and that was great.
Have fun planning and doing!
Madrid only has late hour opening restaurants. Will be a bit cold
