Southern Spain in January

My friend and I are hoping to arrive on the 28th of december in Madrid and stay for 2 weeks or maybe up to 15 days, hoping to hit Valencia, Sevilla, Cadiz, Lagos (is it as much fun in january?), and Morocco. Where should we be for New Years? What are the must-dos in the winter-time? And most importantly, are hostels open then?

oops, i meant to say up to 17 days! Also, is it best to rent a car to get around (we're both 22, but have very impulsive spirits), or take the train and bus?

Hi, countanders!

Of course, any of the biger cities in Spain itīs good choice for New Year, but I recommend you the south, specially Sevilla: the weather is ok, no cold (Madrid is frozen), people is in the Street and diferent way to celebrate Christmas. Everything is open (this is Spain...), and driving is easy. If you go from Madrid to south, there is highwys and donīt use to be problems with snow. Rent a car, going from Madrid to South, and come back trough mediterranean coast.

Yes, Portugal is a near-coast country, the weather use to be always nice (except in the north, rainy and grey), so you don't have any problem going by car. If itīs your first time there, I recommend you Lisboa, cause the south is better in summer (beaches, etc.). But, youīre crossing all the country from Madrid, to South, Mediterranean East and to the opposite side in Portugal...? You must think that between Madrid and Andalucía there isnīt any really interesting, so you can try going directly south and run all the coast, or better take one AVE (high velocity train) from Madrid to Sevilla, and there, rent a car. Of course, you canīt forget Granada (Alhambra), Cadiz, ... Valencia now is specially pretty..

spanish trains are very good and cheap as are those in portugal. So do not ignore as the old city centres have pretty small roads and limited parking (plus theft etc). I would tend to use cars for going into th hils.

Malaga is a good central base with airport and train. Morocco I recommend marakesh but you may want to go to Casablanca by ferry. Suggest you fodor that on the african site
