South of France to Strasbourg: train or plane?

Jump to last reply

Briefly, family group of 5 "seniors" (two with mobility issues) are spending a week in Uzes in Oct. then off to Strasbourg for a few days. i had assumed we would take the TGV from Avignon to Strasbourg but just today started thinking about possibility of flying from Marseille to S-bourg. I'm kind of thinking out loud a I write this and would welcome thoughts about pros and cons of either means.

As i see it train would be easier in that :
1. Familiarity with Avignon TGV gare re returning car, getting on train, size of station, etc.
2. Shorter drive from Uzes
3. Arriving in center of S-bourg, not 10k outside of town
4. Have never been to Marseille; no idea about airport there, returning car, etc. My husband and I have historically had difficulty returning cars to places unknown to us, and we sure would not need that stress with 5 people!

However, considering plane b/c:
1. Shorter time: 1.5 hr vs 5+ hrs.
2. Luggage would be handled by airline, not us hauling it onto train

Bottom line: I know what it's like to travel by train in France (great-- once luggage is stored and in one's seat!), but it's been several years since I have flown within France. I guess I am especially looking for experiences with Marseille airport, rental car return, etc.
Thank you!
