South-east area of Crete?

Can anyone give me feedback on their experience in the south-east area of Creete? We are considering a week at Villea Village in Makri Gialos in May 2014. It is 75 miles from Heraklion (128km) and about a 21/2 hr drive, situated in an olive grove on the edge of an agricultural area. The write up says the scenery is crystal clear waters, sandy beaches, mountain plateaus with windmills & picturesque villages. Also nearby are the summer palaces of King Manoas, Byzatine monasteries & Venetian castles. We are staying in one place the whole week and will likely only make day trips half of the days, the others being spent relaxing & getting a feel for life as the locals live.
So this is what the brochure leads us to believe-any one else have any thoughts or experience to share?
