sound of music tour

Is the sound of music tour worth the time? Is it offered both in the a.m. and the p.m. or is there only one tour a day? Any one have any suggestions on reasonably priced (butnice) accomodations in Salzburg?

hi,

I thought it was worth it - cheesy, yes a little (they play the soundtrack over and over - but I like the soundtrack)... but you see some BEAUTIFUL scenery. I guess it depends on how much time you have there - if only a day, well, maybe not. but if you are there for a few days...

We did it a few years ago and enjoyed it. Previous post is correct: Cheesy, but fun and scenery is great. Watch the movie on video before you depart and you will enjoy tour more.

We always stay in Berchtesgaden when visiting the Salzburg area. Nice town and close to the hustle, bustle of busy Salzburg. The Watzmann hotel in Berchtesgaden is a nice recommendation. If you have a car the drive to Salzburg is no problem.

I have taken such tours twice - once in '70 and once in '87. Enjoyed them both, although the one in '87 had a stop at the church that the wedding took place in, so there may be differences in the places visited

My answer to your question is ABSOLUTELY! It was one of the highlights of my trip! If you grew up watching the Sound of Music movie year after year like I did you will really appreciate seeing all the places involved in its making. Some things you will find out are a little disappointing, but not too bad. Just has to do with the making of the film and actual sets, real scenery, etc. I was there in 1997 and we had the most awesome guide. He took us places where some of the others never take you. It was a small group in mid-November and he took extra time with us. He did play the music over and over, but gave us all sorts of inside info as well. I wish I could remember his name for you. He was wonderful and really made the tour special! I was in Vienna and Salzburg and am thinking of going again with my Mom this November. We stayed at The Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza in Salzburg and it was quite a nice hotel and at that time of year the rates were dirt cheap and it was a 4 star hotel and I believe it was about $30.00-$40.00 or so per night each if that! Austria is beautiful and it was the first European Country I picked to visit because of the Sound of Music! Since then I have been to Paris and London also and loved them both as well, but Austria will always be special because of not only its beauty, but the memories of the Sound of Music! Go see the tour and enjoy every minute!
Have a wonderful time!
Michele
